Humans are concerned for their own survival, so if Japanese fishermen make money off of killing dolphins (which they absolutely do), they're going to keep doing it. Barrels of tiger and leopard corpses have been confiscated from the Chinese, who use large cats to brew things like "tiger wine." They fish for sharks, cut off their fins, then throw them back in the water, at which point they either bleed to death or more likely get ripped apart by other sharks. A recent news story revealed how many pet corpses were found in Puerto Rico because Animal Control thought throwing them off a bridge was the best way to dispose of confiscated animals, but some survived the 50-foot-fall, and you can imagine what condition they're in now. Even in the U.S., farm chickens get tossed, kicked, and smashed, hundreds of them shoved into quarters the size of your bed.
Animal cruelty happens everywhere for reasons of human livelihood and convenience, but sometimes because people just think it's "fun." People who are disgusting, who want to beat up on something alive and since it's illegal to strike other human beings then animals are the best choice.
I disagree with the poster above who said that we have to only think about humanity, because humanity has thought only of itself for way too long. By the time we get everyone fed and watered, all wildlife will have suffered in the process.
But it's true that we determine the fate of everything to come, and by determine the fate of everything to come, I mean bring about its downfall.

Easy question, difficult answer. The fact is that animal cruelty touches almost every aspect of our lives including the cosmetics and drugs that you use without giving a second thought or the milk we drink etc etc.Even the forests lands that have cleared to fill our never ending appetite is a cruelty to animals as without forests animals die and become extinct slowly or have to adjust to human way of life. However on a individual level one can act in ways that will help animal cause. Some of them you have mentioned. The most important is not only to be completely vegetarian but also by not being extravagant.Food should only be taken as a necessity and not as a luxury.Cloths should be worn for longer period of time and not change the wardrobe after few wear.Any product that has animal origin should be avoided. Also, talking to people you know about this issue and bringing their attention is a big step as society starts to get involved. However, this step may make you a laughing stock and insensitive people will will tag you as crazy :)

Can you be that naive? Everyday on the news people are blowing each other to pieces. If humanity is cruel to itself it is naturally cruel to other life forms. It is part of human nature.
Those people in Japan have a right to continue their existence the way they have for 3000 years. You can cry about it all you want. But human have a right to continue their culture.
Would you want to stop the Inuits from harvesting seal and whale? Are you willing to inflict human suffering just because you don't like seeing what's on the news? You need to be more concern about humanity. After all it is humanity that determines the future of all other life forms.
I am not gonna read the article. Not gonna give them my email. Besides, that story has been played on the news before.

Why do some people think its okay to kill plants and not animals. Are they not life. Do they not deserve to live. Cruelty in killing is however wrong. Food can be harvested without pain and suffering.

Because people are naturally evil. Edgar Allan Poe and Anti-Transcendentalism are all about this fact.

People just don't stop doing things because its "wrong". People still steal, cheat, murder, lie, and hurt others. As much as we want it to, that will never change.
I like how you can't read the article unless you enter your email. Thanks!
