I'd like to venture you are confusing two slightly archaic words: hollow, which as explained means empty and when applied to a landscape feature such as Sleepy Hollow means valley, and Hallow which is cognate with Holy and is usually used to mean to make holy but also means Holy as in Holy Evening (Halloween) or the Hallows in legend or J. K. Rowling's books.
