how long does a non stress test take?

At the most, 1 hour. Could be less if they determine the baby is reactive before that. Reactive means there is the presence of 2 heart beat accelerations that are 15 beats above the average baseline heart rate lasting greater than 15 seconds, and the heart rate has good "variability", which means it doesn't stay at a constant rate - it fluctuates regularly, and there are no decelerations.

From the time they put the monitors on you, the non stress test itself is just for 10-15 mintues. They measure if you are having any contractions at all, and measure the baby's heart acceleration and decelaration. Babies heart rate go up and down quickly and doctors have specific things they look at to see how your baby is doing in there.

All you really have to do is lie down for about 10-15 minutes, that's all.

I've had numerous non stress tests and numerous ultrasounds with my twin pregnancy, so I know! :-)

About 45 minutes on average. I had some with my first baby - they thought I had IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) so I had to be monitored regularly at the end of my pregnancy.

Some of my tests were shorter though if they got positive responses earlier on.

All the best to you!
