My daughter goes for her 20 week ultrasound in about 3 hours (and I am very excited to see the baby again and find out the gender). She was not told to drink water or make sure she had to pee. When I was pregnant years ago, every time I had an ultrasound I had to have a full bladder.
I'm am going to call the doctor as soon as they open this morning to ask them, but I was wondering if anyone else was not told to have a full bladder?
It worries me that if I don't call and my daughter goes in with an empty bladder they will make her reschedule.

I called the doctor's office and they said that a full bladder was not necessary. But thanks for all of the responses.
If we find out the gender I will add that to this post when we get back. Thanks again.

Well congrats!!! Aren't ultrasounds great?!?! The only ultrasound I had to have a full bladder for was the one I had to have when I went to the ER for bleeding. And during that one I was given a catheter. Other than that, I was never told to have a full bladder. And even if they did tell me, my doctors office makes you go to the bathroom before you see the ultrasound tech or the doctor. I've had SEVERAL ultrasounds and the tech never said anything about not being able to see the parts well enough.

I was told to have a full bladder at my first three ultrasounds (9 weeks, 20 weeks, and 30 weeks). But, for all of them (except 9 weeks) they made me empty it half way through. The picture was just as clear with an empty bladder,
I go for another ultrasound next week at 33 weeks and they said I don't have to bother having a full bladder. I think sometimes it just depends on the tech and their preference.
If your daughter has an interal vaginal ultrasound then they will actually want her to be completely empty.
Enjoy the ultrasound!!

Get her to drink a full glass of water 1 hour before her appointment. This will make sure she has a full bladder... oh, and don't let her pee.
I have 5 month old twins and have had above 15 ultrasounds, as twin pregnancies are high-risk and was told that it is always better to have a full bladder... or at least not an empty one.
So 1 full glass of water is not too terribly bad, so just let her drink this much.
Good luck!!

I was told to have a full bladder for my first scan at 14 weeks, after that i do not think it is as important as the baby is quite big and can be clearly seen. Do not worry about rescheduling, at 20 weeks i was asked to give a urine sample just before i went for my scan, so my bladder was not full and there was no problem.

I would go with a full bladder. She could always empty it there. My daughter just had her first ultrasound @ 8 weeks( What a tear jerk that was to see the heartbeat for the first time and watch the excitement in her and her husbands face!) and had to have full bladder.Congratulations to you and yours!

right before i had my 20 week scan, i was asked for a urine sample- so my bladder was empty and the baby and everything else could be seen clearly. I think having a full bladder is more important earlier on in pregnancy, like at your 12 week scan, but if your unsure then still ring the doctor. congrats xxx

Usually, they want you to have something in your bladder. However, you don't have to be "full." In fact, at my last ultrasound, they told me my bladder was "too full" and I had to go to the bathroom and try to urinate only just a little. Very uncomfortable and painful!
Just advise your daugther to drink some water, and then take along the bottle in case she needs to drink a little more. They won't reschedule her for just this reason.

Um... it depends on the doctor.. I had one at 17 wks and i needed a full bladder and one at 25 where i didnt need one. and then one at 33 but ofcourse i didnt need a full bladder for that one cause she was already so big! i suggest calling like you said just to make sure, because you dont want to get your hopes up and then have to turn around and go home like you said! good luck!

I would say she has to have a full bladder.Mine usually specifies that on my referral from my doctor. At 20 weeks it would be hard to see the baby without a full bladder.

my wife had a scan at 7w 5d (but it was internal so didn't matter)...then another at 12w..she wasn't asked to have a full bladder but she had anyway so it worked out well...then she had a GP visit at 17w and didn't have a full bladder..she was scanned and got to see everything clearly...has another scan now on the 27th..where she'll be just short of 20w and hasn't been asked to have a full bladder...but as someone else on here suggested..I ssay, go with a full bladder and ask as soon as you get there if it's needed...if not - go pee! :-) Best of luck!
