This is no laughing matter! The disappearance of the bees will result in no pollination of many crops that rely on them. Thousands of hives are now dead. They believe it is from a certain insecticide that is supposed to be non toxic to humans and animals but is evidently killing the bees along with other insects.
As for Monsanto, should you be speaking of aspartame (Nutra-sweet) or any of the other different named products know there are at least 92 bad things that can happen from ingesting these drugs...yes, aspartame is a drug.

This disappearance of bees is a very serious problem! Your life depends on it and not just as a sweetener!

Bumumble- Monsanto is a very large chemical manufacturer. I think the HQ may be in St. Louis. As a child I remember living with the constant stench from the stacks of Monsanto across the Mississippi. It employs a large number of Midwesterners, but has a long history of polluting.
Old Know All-- Bless you sir for this information. I am a bee lover and I feel all the better for this revelation.
Questioner- Excellent question--I never bought in to the cell phone cause hypothesis but have often wondered if the major polluters were taking their toll. Like OKA I have heard other apiarists ? (bee enthusiasts) mention several new viral strains that were taking out large numbers of bees not just here in the US but worldwide. We would certainly be in deep sh** without them. m

I knew someone would bring up the alleged Einstein quote, as rico has above.
Why would Einstein, a physicist, be an expert on bees and their necessity for human life? Why would anyone care what he had to say on the matter? If someone asked about the speed of light, Einstein is your man, but bees? Not so much.
Of course, Einstein is not quoted as saying any such thing - this is probably a made-up quote. The excellent urban-legend website Snopes has the details: http://www.snopes.com/quotes/einstein/bees.asp

I'm glad you brought this up. Round me the furry beas have all but dissapeared as well as the hive variety.
It is often put down to the mite Varroa and I'm sure this has a role - it is like a human with several cats clinging to them. But the farmers (calling themselves, without irony 'guardians of the countryside') who have killed the wild flowers and are primarilly responsible.

Hive bees are disappearing, mainly because of virus infections. Once the viruses have run their course, bee keepers will restock with bees from other parts of the world. Wild bees (the furry varieties) are thriving - probably because they don't have the competition from hive bees.
