To understand the differences between the two parties, let's first establish what the Republican party is all about. Ironically, it took a foreigner to express it best: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"If you believe that government should be accountable to the people, not the people to the government...then you are a Republican!
If you believe a person should be treated as an individual, not as a member of an interest group... then you are a Republican!
If you believe your family knows how to spend your money better than the government does... then you are a Republican!
If you believe our educational system should be held accountable for the progress of our children ... then you are a Republican!
If you believe this country, not the United Nations, is the best hope of democracy in the world ... then you are a Republican!
And, ladies and gentlemen ...if you believe we must be fierce and relentless and terminate terrorism ... then you are a Republican!
There is another way you can tell you're a Republican. You have faith in free enterprise, faith in the resourcefulness of the American people ...and faith in the U.S. economy. To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say: Don't be economic girlie men!"
That's what Arnold said. Pretty impressive, isn't it?
They say that political parties change radically about every 50 years. It used to be that Republicans were viewed as fearful of change, and pessimistic. Those are now Democratic traits. The Republicans envision a world where Democracy is not just prevalent in the Western world, but also in the Middle East and Africa. We have faith in the intelligence, the emotional stability, and the ability of non-Western people to handle the rigours of Democracy. The irony is, Liberals say they believe in equality, but if you get them really steamed up about the Iraq war, they will finally lose all composure and blurt out, "Oh, you don't really believe those hot heads in the Middle East can handle Democracy, do you?"
Catch the unbelievable irony? Republicans are unfairly accused of being racist, but we are the ones who solidly believe that these people are every bit as capable as we are to run their own affairs. We don't believe they need a strongman dictator to keep them in line.

The differences have become "shady" in recent times do to political pandering!
Let's remember BOTH parties stand for very good things. The extremists have redefined the parties and that is a shame!
What I think is : Republicans are more likely to side with less government and big business.(Don't forget that healthy businesses are the foundation for a good economy and job market.) Democrats, have for years been, the party of the people. (Meaning that they support more government regulations and programs that boost people up.)
Other than that, the issues seem to fall all over the place. (The many candidates and their views are tribute to this!)
I KNOW someone will be outraged by my over simplifying of the parties. (There's way too much anger out there.)
If my answer is seriously flawed,THEN I hope someone else will correct it for you.
I hope you were looking for a REAL answer and this helped!

THAT is why i am a republican!

There is only lip-service difference---both are installed in office by the "Monied Interests" for control of government.
My hope is that we could elect people -who before taking office or even seeking office would ask themselves the question that John Kennedy posed----and then followup on it.
"Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country"
