Today's top story on Yahoo news is about Michael Jackson and Brittany Spears...
Last week I was disturbed the top story was about a 17 American Idol winner getting a tattoo.
Who is the audience they are targeting? What possible use is this kind of reporting?
Are they dumbing down American youth?

I don't know if its media as much as it is just, like... modern conveniences?

I mean, I'm a graduate student, and I can't stand school or studying, and I could really give a hoot about literature or theory -- it's purely about the piece of paper in my mind, and it's so odd when you meet people in the program who are as passionate about some author or theory or w/e as an average person is about Xbox.

I would much rather watch some hot anchor woman on fox or cnn than amy goodman on democracy now! or some other independent outlet...

I think the point is, people are not brainwashed, it's just that we're social animals. Truth, accuracy, perfect logic, etc. is not all that important to us, it's much more important for us to feel like we're a part of and of the same mind-set as our community. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with that, because we're not even in power to begin with -- so who cares if we're misinformed? it's not like we're the ones with the hands over the nuclear launch button.

First of all when asking this question it's important to remember that the media is run by people who may be unintentionally choosing these articles because they think people like them...It's their job, so we can't really accuse them of brainwashing us... It's our choice to choose what we read and what we believe...Not theirs... It's okay to be disturbed by the occasional wierd story that makes the headlines but who cares? It's a free world...

unfortunatley people crave news like this because are own lives are so boring.

but i do agree this shouldnt be front page news, theres a lot more to be focusing on!!!

btw the story you said about the american idol winner, it's actually about Jordin Sparks new song being called Tatoo!

Only the sheep get brainwashed...!

Look, i understand its irritating reading about silly girls all the time but if you look at the right places you'll find lots about Tibel & Dafur & Myamar and a whole lot of worthy issues that you can learn & update yourself about. Go for it!

That is the main reason why we need to filter what news we read before letting them sink into our mind.
