I've only had it for a year. I water once a month or so. Sometimes even less. What could cause this & is it hopeless? Any solutions? I love 'Clyde the Cactus.' :(

EDIT: We keep him inside, next to a south-facing window in my gift shop. It's not humid. Now that the heat's on, it \'s actually quite dry.
The black rot mentioned fits, except for the humidity.

Can I cut him in half? Really?
How would he heal? Wouldn't this attract bugs & dust & stuff?
Poor Clyde. Honestly, I hardly ever water him...

I'm sorry but i think Clyde is a goner it sounds like rot from over watering you say you do not water alot but cactus is very sensitive in the colder months needing water very very sparingly and through the colder months less and less water .I would try to cut him in half to save the lower part and re-pot using a very little amount of water just to wet the new soil .Place in a sunny location

Cactus usually don't need a lot of water at all. They were created to live in the hot, dry conditions of the desert.

sound like too much water. cut off the dead rot and let it dry out. make sure you use cactus soil and only water it a tablespoon or 2 a week. It might come out of it. good luck

I live in the desert....

I believe he's just cold....

You should probably water him a bit more, but I think it's just too cold for him at night....
Perhaps you could bring him inside :)
I love clyde the cactus too. :)
