I noticed when i design a website.. im over critical on it..
the typical "naaah doesnt look good" or something along those lines..

What bugs me is, am i a perfectionist or over-critical on myself because this happens ALOT for me?

I mean, obviously while your designing, theirs some things that you know just plain dont look good.. but when i finish a designs outline.. i always think its not good enough.. even when i look at other similiar designs and those look WORSE... Even when i do finish a design and like it.. a bit later ill look back on it and think it sucks and scrap it..

Its extremely fustrating to me because what if the design i just finished is actually really good, but because of my thoughts on it, i end up scrapping it and starting over thus waisting a perfectly good template...

Is this a problem? something i have to live with? something that can be helped?

any opinions on this if you can relate are much appreciated!

I believe you are not a programmer, but an artist.
I work with them, and, often, I want to strangle them!
As a programmer (or web designer), I want RESULTS. I want the site to work on IE, FF, Opera, Netscape and Safari (they are the majors). To me, if a pixel is wrong on a picture, I don't really care.
To an artist, the image is NEVER finished, so I design a rough logo, wait six months for a logo from the artist, and change it again the year after, because the "artist" thinks it is not good.
But when I compare the three images...
I can't see much difference.
Nor can web surfers!
So, does it matter?
Be Both, an artist and a programmer.
The programmer MUST concentrate on efficiency and proper coding.
The artist MUST be able to make a QUICK design that satisfies the programmer, even if it requires another six months to finish it!
You are both. Let the programmer make money, and the artist waste time...

Used to happen with me a lot when I started out but the dilemma faded as time passed by and I became more proficient. What i did was I started drawing layouts on paper to my heart's content before moving on to the computer.

There a lot of web designers out there who do excellent work and looking at their galleries puts us to shame. But what you need to realize is that excellence is not something you are born with but it is acquired through a lot of hard work and hard work without criticism will only take you round and round in circles.

I'd admire the fact that you are self-critical and as any good designer will tell you good criticism is the greatest quality you can develop. Without it we will still be making sites as we did in 1996.

Ive worked with a lot of developers myself and befriended many over the years. For them things are different, either the code works or it doesn't work as it was intended to work.

Their job is technical. Your job is aesthetical.

The two disciplines are world apart and thats why they dont gel well together. If you look at the dominant names in the web industry you'll rarely find someone who is equally apt at both design and development; the only exception Ive found is of Shaun Inman.

Be easy on yourself and establish an internal deadline and live by it. Frustration will only make things worse. Youll find similar traits in every good designer you come across.

Your opinions don't matter really. It's the user's opinion that matters, they are the people that will be using the site (unless it's just a personal website, then looks don't really matter). I suggest getting other people to look at the website design and see their opinions as sometimes you look at your design too long to think about it "fresh".

relies upon whether you desire to artwork freelance or for a agency? develop a portfolio of sites (furnish your centers for unfastened to a charity/good reason/community businesses andyou could even get provided funds to proceed updating the area interior the destiny from them) will enable you to plenty especailly in case you desire to bypass freelance. mutually as skills frequently look good (and are perfect) ,even with out them an outstanding portfolio will particularly shine with the aid of. My advice could be to artwork freelance for somewhat gaining understanding of latest skills and develop a portfolio, getting a sense for the industry till now thinking jacking on your activity. take a glance additionally on webdesign boards for advice and networking. i could recommend a mag called webdesigner, seems to frequently conceal activity components.
