i thought i read that somewhere. I'd like to preserve my images as long as possible.

You will copy the contents of the disk onto new media every few years if you are paranoid (and you'll have multiple disks with the same thing on it in case one fails).

Putting them on a hard disk or two is also a good idea.

If you just keep copying things every few years to updated media then you should be able to keep the data alive almost forever (or at least as long as you're willing to keep copying files).

No - but this is one area where quality does matter! Don't buy the cheapest CD/DVDs - if stored properly in the right conditions, they contents should be safe for many years. As a good practice, re-write the contents to new media every 5 years or so.

They will last about the same time. They are both vunerable to heat and light. So after you burn the disc, keep it in a dark cool place, the disc should last you years.

Data lasts forever, just as long as you don't corrupt it by sratching or bending the disk.
