It stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. When ESPN was established a lot of people doubted that a 24/7 sports network would be viable, so they put in "entertainment" for cover in case they decided to round out their programming with movies, etc. At the time just about the only other cable speciality channels were CNN and HBO, and a lot of people considered the whole idea of an all sports channel a joke. ESPN's Canadian affiliate was established after the all-sports format was proven to work, hence it's simply called The Sports Network.

ESPN is an acronym for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. The company does not use it anymore and is simply called ESPN Inc. ESPN has been a subsidiary of Disney since 1996 although technically ESPN is a joint venture between Disney and Hearst with Disney having an 80% stake and Hearst having the other 20% of the company. Very few people know about the Disney and Hearst joint venture in ESPN.

Employment of Special People Nation
Just seeing the "experts" that ESPN employs shows that any goon can get a job there if you meet certain criteria. Seriously, the jibberish that Stuart Scott spits out wasn't even cool in the mid 90's. The days of Mees, Patrick and Olbermann are long gone. Now we have Stephen A. Smith (the angry black man) acting like he knows what he is talking about. ESPN, your lucky no network has risen to challenge you yet.

For a while I thought it was Extra Special Penguins Network due to all the Penguins games that were on. But like others have said before me, it is Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. That is how they can pull off putting poker and other non sporting events on their stations.
