if it's avast warning, maybe you chose to turn it off. if it's displayed by some unknown software, it might be some kind of malware. run superantispyware and check if it finds anything suspicious. you may also want to try another anti spyware, here are some free anti spyware downloads: http://www.2-spyware.com/compare2.php

Option A -
if it has only happened recently then try restarting your computer to see if it fixes itself

Option B -
control panel > windows security center
then click the "virus protection" heading to show details

there might be an option there to tell it that you have configured your own antivirus

Option C -
reinstall your antivirus software

Option D -
Hide the message....
right click on the task bar and go properties
then click the "Customize" button
then under "current items", find the message that keeps coming up and change its behaviour to "always hide"
then click apply and come out, the message should disappear

To specify that you're using an antivirus program that Windows does not find

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Security Center.
3. In the Security Center, under Virus Protection, click Recommendations. (The Recommendations button is not available when your Virus Protection setting is marked ON.)
4. In the Recommendations dialog box, select the I have antivirus software that I'll monitor myself check box, and then click OK.

If the security warning shield from windows security center, then probably th enothing is wrong. Windows Security Center identifies only certain antivirus softwares and misses certain others. Try uninstalling Avast. Windows Security Center identifies AVG antivirus. It is a freeware, efficient, dependable and the security center dentifies it. You will not have any trouble either from AVG or the security center here after if yu install AVG.

For list of other antivirus softwares visit the windwos security center homepage.

right click on the icons and select OPEN or SETTINGS or PREFERENCES (I forget what each one uses but u get my drift). Open the software and have a look at the settings. for the antivirus, make sure real-time protection is turned and that auto-update virus signatures is on (my language may dffer from that in the software but you can see what Im getting at). if necessary update. Once youve done this do a complete system scan. (dont forget this step, some virii will attack your anti virus and if this was the cause of it switching off you need to get right onto that.)

Anti-virus or net-secure package may be turned off by hackers.

This happen with F-secure before.

Bring your computer off-line and then reboot it.

Reinstall your security package with new setting and set a new password for protection.

In fact, you should upgrade your secure-paackage to thing like McAfee.

You may have a spyware that is blocking the security center or the anti virus program has been attacked.

go through every menu possible on the respected programs starting with their properties tabs or configuration or settings menus and look for show icon on systray.

Try systray in their help files

also they have to be running for the icon to show, if they are disabled from starting then they will not show

check in msconfig start up menu
