Money can't make you happy. Hell I got lots of money.
And I'm no where near happy right now. It can't give you heath but it can give you choices that some people don't have. But in the long run I would give it all up to be heath and happy right now.

I agree with those who cite the mass media as a big cause. So many of us in America are simply spoiled consumers, seduced by thousands of advertisements we view daily. We are led to surround ourselves with all kinds of stuff in order to "feel good". And of course the ads lead us to believe we must replace our stuff every so often with newer items. My clothes mostly come from the Goodwill; my books (which are my big things) are from the library. The poor are always with us, but our mindless consuming ( which can be an addiction) distracts us from giving them more than a passing thought. The manufacturers, stores, etc take the money and run and we are left holding the bag--which in truth is empty.

I think in many cases it isn't the object that the person actually wants. They want the feeling that they get from having it.
Also people who grew up poor tend to packrat "things", it makes them feel more secure.
Being non-materialistic is wonderful, and it obviously makes you happy, but try to be tolerant of the others, because in many cases they are trying to fill a void, one that you happily don't have.

Mass Marketing...the ability to make people want things in which they do not need...It's our culture, our society...We are a capitalistic society, but to make money you must have customers, and to build a massive economy like the one here in the U.S., you must have materialistic customers that desire things they do not need.
We have basically been brainwashed from day one to want what we do not need so that we will participate in the economy and grow wealth for the nation.
It sounds bad, but capitalism creates competition, and competition creates advancement...so that now you can access any info you need in seconds and cook a pizza in a minute and a half in the microwave...

I think some people don't ever grow up. They are childish throughout life. We all need some materialism, but some people worship things to the point that people don't matter at all in their life. As long as they have their "things", they're happy.

I don't know why some people are greedy. They obviously need some kind of security blanket and material things make them feel better.

Some people say it is still the result of the Great Depression.
Me? I say it's a narcissistic character.
Edit:
Reminds me of JOKE:
Old tycoon fussed and bargained with God to be able to "take it with him when he went" (his riches). Finally God said okay.
Old tycoon had his assets liquidated and cashed in on solid gold bars, which were place in his coffin with him at death.
They opened coffin in heaven, and St. Peter asked God, "What???". God said, "Yeah, I told him he could bring it.... but, road paving??"

Because these materialistic people are shallow and underneath they are insecure and just want to be accepted amongst their peers.
Its sad really - because most girls nowadays are just clones of eachother and copying celebrities.
Where's their sense of individuality?
