By meeting his friends and close ones. Don't tell them what you are looking for... but by getting closer to them too and by talking and discussing, you could get to know more about him and you can clarify yourself with yourself and can change your thinking accordingly.

Other than a lie detector or catching him in a lie with evidence or facts that contradict what he says, there is no way. There are certain ways that your eyes will look depending on if you are trying to remember something or if you were making something up, but that varies and is not reliable (especially since not every lie is being made up at the exact moment the person tells it - he could be remembering a story he made up earlier).
Studies have shown that if a person is trying to convince you that something is true, a person who's lying would use the same methods and say the same things as a person who is telling the truth.

Do you really want to be an obsessive chick trying to catch him in a lie? Really not productive and totally stressful for yourself, if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Trust your gut instinct instead.

Lack of eye contact. People who are lying will look away from you while they're talking to you.
