Yes you can, but your goals have to be realistic.
Say that someone wanted to be a dishwasher for life and live humbly for the rest of their life. Well, that's an easily attainable goal.
Say somone wanted to become a lawyer or a doctor. Attainable, but a bigger committment than being a dishwasher. And a career that would require more of a persons spare time than a labor position.
Then say someone wished to become famous and rich. Quite honestly, while attainable, a small percentage of people have reached this particular goal.
Now, in the areas of life where one wishes to be better at something than they were, or to become more popular will require a committment as well and they are attainable. So, again, I say yes, we can live the life that we dream of as long as we are willing to compromise in the process of accepting that our ideal visions aren't going to be 100% realized. And that is in no way a sign that we haven't made life the way we want it.
Basically, it all comes down to attitude, and if you are pleased with where you are then you have satisfied the opinion of the only person in the world that you need to be concerned with. It doesn't matter if anyone else is impressed.

The saying is true. Your next sentence is not. What you make of life has nothing to do with what you want it to be,

Yeah. I mean it. Whenever you are in a bad mood, your day just can't seem to get any better. But if you are in a good mood, even the sun rising makes you happy. It's the consequences of your actions that make your path of life.

Not always, we don't have control of what we get in life. However, how we react to things I believe is our choice.
