historically and internationally, right wing refers to conservatives and left wing to liberals.

to be more specific:

left wing refers to more socialist goverment and economic models, the extreme being communism. more moderate examples included canada, with its free healthcare. typical left wing ideals favor the common man, the middle class, working people, the under-represented, lilke children, minorities, the sick and the chronically poor.

rigth wing refers to more capitalistic models, such as adolph hitlers moderate nazi regime, and the more extreme example of course being george w. bush's modern america, where the president weilds the power of a king, the richest 10,000 people who ever lived on earth get a $15,000,000,000,000 tax break, 300,000 iraqi civilians get carpet bombed, and habeas corpus ceases to exist.

Left and right usually refers to positions on economic matters, with the left favoring policies that that favors labor and the right those that favor business or capital. Conservatives in the US is right on economic issues but also includes social Conservatives who are most concerned with cultural issues. Liberals favor policies the promote more economic equality, but there is also a cultural component that favors a more open permissive society. Both say they favor freedom but authoritarianism is present in both the right and the left and both sides have supporters individual rights.

The leftwing refers to Democrats that are liberal socially.

The rightwing refers to Republicans that are conservative socially.

"Left-wing" and "right-wing" come from the location of seats in the British government.

The modern-day terms are DIFFERENT than their original terms.

The American meanings are DIFFERENT than European meanings.

Modern American meaning:

Left-wing: pro-abortion, pro-illegal immigration, pro-hollywood, more government programs.

Right-wing: pro-christianity, lower taxes, pro-gun.
