I have actually had teachers that allowed this, one teacher in particular said that it helped the students to focus...also, there is some logic that if the students have their mouths busy and their stomachs in check they will not be chatting with other students, thus maintaining a level of silence.

Well I'm not a teacher but I am a student. Here are my thoughts:
1. If we are eating we obviously aren't talking because we're eating.
2. As long as we aren't chomping or doing something gross what does it affect anyone else.
3. When you eat it's giving you brain power.
4. To be honest it's easier for me to concentrate when I'm doing something. If I'm listening doing nothing something will distract me, but when I'm drawing or something I can listen better (don't ask that's just me).
5. Would you rather have the person eating and relieving themselves or them having their minds on lunch the rest of the hour?

Hope I helped!
I don't think students should be punished for eating.

I am a high school teacher, and if a student eats or drinks in class, they will be spending 2 hours in after school detention per the school rule. It is distracting to other students and the education process.

When I was in high school my economics teacher allowed us to eat and drink in his class. One day he got fed up, So when a girl asked to use the restroom after eating her lunch in his class he Said loudly and angrily, " you come to my class you laugh, eat and drink, and when you are finished you ask for a pass to go to the bathroom to relieve yourself".

Tell them if they do it again there food will go in the bin, and they can get it out later if they want it.
