Okay, I'm going to re-word my last question. Just out of curiosity, I was just wondering how far is San Jose, CA to Sunnyvale, CA by foot? I have a friend who will be traveling to San Jose at the end of December and he told me that he wants to travel from San Jose to Sunnyvale by foot. I looked at a map and I told him he was nuts if he was going to travel by foot. But just out of curiosity how far is it and HOW LONG, on average, does it take to travel by foot between those two points?

From downtown San Jose to downtown Sunnyvale is about 11 miles. Assuming average walking speed of 5 mph, it'll take your friend 2 hr 15 min. But keep in mind that San Jose is a big city in terms of surface area, so if your friend starts at the Southern end of the city, it could take him all day to get to Sunnyvale.

If you want a more precise way to estimate distance, you can use this: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ . Very nifty way to trace the exact walking route that you want to take.

Your friend should check out a map to pick a good route, because San Jose is an enormous city, and walking from a close border is going to be faster than walking from downtown or from Berryessa or South San Jose.

I am looking at google maps (which doesn't have city limits) and from the north west border of San Jose, around 880 and 82, to Sunnyvale, is about 4-5 miles. 2.5 miles per hour is a pretty good pace, and if you figure in stopping for red lights it's going to take at least 2.5 to 3 hours. Compare this to 6-7 miles from downtown, 10-12 miles from Evergreen, and 15 miles from the very southern part of the city.

Even though 5 miles is a doable distance, I think that he is nuts to want to walk that. December in this area is typically cold and rainy, although we have been having warm weather sometimes in the winter. Also, there isn't much daylight that time of year.

If your friend wants to go somewhere specific but can't drive, he should look at the local bus routes. If he just wants to be insane, there are much more scenic places he could visit. Willow Glen, near San Jose, has a lot of great light displays on homes during the holidays.

Mapquest says 11.7 miles from San Jose to Sunnyvale. So how fast can your friend walk a mile? Just times that by 11.7 and you'll have your answer. Why doesn't your friend take a bus? There are lots of them.

Probably no one knows, on average, how long it might take to travel between the two cities on foot because no one has ever DONE it!

Good luck! ♥

When I was much younger, I could walk a very fast pace, 5 miles would take me just about an hour so, who knows, it may take him quite awhile. I don't think he'll make it on foot, I'd be afraid of someone getting ahold of me before I made it to my distance.

It really matters where in each city they would be planning on walking to. No matter what though it would not be a very pleasant walk. I would recommend the bus or train or some other way of transportation.

Your map had a scale on it. Estimate the miles and estimate how many miles you can walk a day. One estimate that I found said it was about 40 miles—I'm not sure how accurate that is..
