I can remember watching two cartoons that did that geographical faux pas: 1) "Count Duckula" where they transported the castle 2 Down Under instead of Freud's country hoping 2 seek professional help, & 2) "The Simpsons," where the German typeface of Australia's Parliament had 2 scribble in the "al".

Can there b other situations 4 that error 2 happen? I'll award a thumbs-up & maybe Best Answer if you've done so & can tell a good story about it. & what about Swaziland & Switzerland? Slovenia & Slovakia? (Bush 43 did that while running 4 office.) Or maybe 2 cities w/ the same name, like St. Petersburg or Paris, Odessa & Bakersfield (all 3 in TX).

I was in the Model UN in college and went to several national conferences, and you would not believe how many college students constantly screwed up Australia and Austria. It was embarrassing.

Dominica for Dominican Republic; French Guiana, Guyana, and Guinea are commonly mixed up; Ireland for Iceland; Liberia for Libya; Mauritania for Mauritius; Morocco for Monaco; Niger for Nigeria; etc. Misspelling countries, however, is almost unforgivable.

It happens very often mixing up Austria with Australia. In some languages they sound similar (p.e. Turkish : Avusturya - Avustralia) and the ignorance of many people in knowledge of geography.
