When Superman got killed in the 90's (and then brought back)
word was, that the only reason they brought him back was 200,000 letters from New York City pleading to bring back their idol.

It talked of statures, and various other things representing Superman in and around NYC.

is this true? is there really a statue of Superman in NYC?

The 'Death of Superman' was a sales gimmick from the beginning.
Think about it, why would any publisher kill off the most popular superhero of all time?
Sales were slumping, and Supe's stories had gotten a little stale. By killing him off, it got everyone's attention, and reminded everyone how much they really loved ol' Supes. Needless to say, the 'Return of Superman' was among the highest selling comic series of all time (suprise, suprise)

I know that Metropolis, Indiana (or Illinois I can never remember) has a statue of Superman in their town square

But the plan in DC was always to bring him back, it was just a matter of when and then in what capacity, but they were never going to keep him dead for any real stretch of time

He's ******* Superman. They realized that if Superman died, they'd look like Jackasses.
