The real conflict started back in the last part of the ninetieth century when Japan invaded China in the Sino-Japanese war of 1894. Japan was an emerging colonial power and looking to expand its influence. This war along with the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-5 which further helped expand Japanese power (by defeating an European power).

After WW1 Japan still had interests of expanding their power and understood that any resistance wouldn't come from an European power, but the USA.

In 1931 Japan again invaded China. After year of war and horrible events taking place on the Chinese people by the Japanese military China asked the US to step in. When diplomatic pressure didn't produce a withdrawal from China the US then went to economic pressure.

Japanese leaders feared a withdrawal from China would result in a revolt against the government (the Emperor was a figurehead) they told Yamamoto to start planning an attack against the US, he choose Pearl Harbor.

The Japanese wanted to extend her "Empire", but unfortunately they didn't have enough oil. Burma also has a natural wealth in valuable gems, especially sapphires - great wealth = money = expansion/colonisation.
