My furnace is now blowing hot air up to the cold windows. What a place to put those things. Is this because HVAC guys have always done it that way? So how do I keep the air from blowing over the windows?

Perimeter vents came about as a method of combating the cold air that comes in thru windows, and walls. By blowing the warmer air over them first, where it is colder, the room temperature evens out better... there are fewer 'cold spots' in winter.

To stop the air from blowing up behind the curtain, all you need to do is put a deflector over the vent. You can find these at most home stores. They are usually clear plastic and adjustable to width. Normally they have a magnet or two in them to hold them in place.

Good Luck

Heating vents, as well as baseboard heaters, are typically placed below a window because the window is the coldest spot in the room. There exists a plastic gadget called a "deflector", which attaches magnetically to a hot-air register and redirects the air flow away from the wall. These should be available from most well-stocked hardware, plumbing, or HVAC dealers.

You can buy a diverter, it is a clear plastic piece that fits over the warm air register to divert the warm air at an angle rather than straight up. They are fairly inexpensive at a home supply Lowes, or Home Depot type store.
