The war with Napoleon-led France is the backdrop to personal stories of members from four aristocratic families: the Bezuhovs, Bolkonskys, Kuragins, and Rostovs. Love, death, war, spiritual struggle, and financial loss bring personal growth for the characters and underscore the main theme: the search for the meaning of life.

I know Mother Teresa won the Leo Tolstoy International Award.

It is the story of the Russian High Society during the era of Napoleon. It is a fantastic story, and one that everyone should try and read at some stage. I loved it and read it twice. Maybe time for a 3rd now. It was written in the late 1880's I think. Maybe wrong about the date.
