Actually, it was first said by a well known DeadHead and taper named Gus at the New Year's Eve 1987 Pay Per View broadcast in the full ask the band segment. Gus: Hi, my name is Gus and who are the Grateful Dead and why do they follow me everywhere I go? The band: (laughing) You're it, Gus. We know everything about you, Gus. We've got the file right here. It ended up being popular enough that by spring tour 1988 there were bumper stickers asking the question.
