I can tell you this how times have changed. Kentucky which I consider a southern State. In the 20s When my Great Grand Father and other Family members Passed--There was no funeral Home involvement. The family members were laid out in the Parlor of the House or another suitable room. There was No embalming. The Friends and relatives came to the home to give their Last repects. The deceased were taken by Horse Drawn Hearse or Wagon to the cemetary usually a small site either a family type on a Farm or at a Church in the Communities Cemetary. There was always a big Wake--pitch in dinner from relatives and friends at the Home of the deceased and People Usually ate Outside Weather Permitting. Another custom was the surrounding Neighbors looked after the surviving Spouse for Years and Years after---A big Change from Todays Times!!!!!
