For each school year we read 8 books 4 per semester (now I'm pretty fine with that)
But it's the books we have to read that I think is pretty difficult
For the 6th Grade
The Odyssey
For 7th grade
The Cat of Bubastes
Pilgrims Progress
Dante's Inferno
8th
The Last of the Mohicans
1776
Those are the books I can remember

And I'm only asking this question, because I'm interested in what other people think. I know, my friends now, my parents know, and of course the teachers now that these books are hard. They're trying to push us to the limit of our abilities and thus prepare us for college.

I won't comment on the books. If you are in the 6th grade, you shouldn't be a participant in these Answer pages. So, as gently as I can say it, "LEAVE". Anyway, that is a question between you, your parents and your teacher. What we say doesn't mean diddley-squat if you get my drift.

As long as the books are consistently difficult I don't think there is a problem. If you are reading The Odyssey in 6th grade, you should not be reading Charlotte's Web in 5th.
The only problem I see is the appropriateness of these books for at the age level. In some of these books there is a bit more mature subject matter that is better understood a ages where the brain has become more developed. Not to mention parents feel more comfortable discussing with their children.
So the real issue here is not the difficulty of these books, but the difficulty of comprehension of these books.

Ahmm.. I dont really know if you can say that your school is too hard. I just know that there really are schools that have higher standards than others so it actually depends on the child's ability to cope with the demands of the school's standards. Parents should evaluate whether that particular school is too burdensome for the child that it is no longer healthy for the child. There should be joy in learning as well for knowledge to sink in or else it will all be useless. You'll soon find the child burnt-out and will have no desire to study anymore. My friend transferred his son to a diff. school for this reason. And it was better for him because he was able to excel in a less-stiff school environment.

Well, the full version of The Odyssey isn't appropriate for 6th graders (I read it in sophomore AP Lit) and Dante's Inferno, at least in its full form, isn't appropriate for Jr. High kids at all. However, if you read an abridged version, I don't see a problem with it.
The rest of the books look about right.

maybe they are trying to overcompensate for the lack of parenting and lack of anything difficult in many kids lives these days....or perhaps they have been to some of these chats and seen how horribly kids are spelling and talking these days!!
Or maybe they just simply want you to be better than you think you can be....are they hard...sure....but if they weren't it wouldn't be school and you wouldn't be learning anything....good luck!!
