I am in the Sierra Foothills. (of Northern California)
2400 feet. (give or take)
Its dark outside, while I go to get firewood, and this is the second time I have heard this creature, "along the house" its is like a snorting, gasping sound, with its body plunking quickly along away from me. (yea I know about flashlights)
Its just like a pig or hog that is pissed off and cant breathe right, sound!
Have not seen it yet and am wondering what it is, as it only comes out at night.
thanks
Hey, ok, I admit it kind of freaks me out and being that I am not in the mood to look around at NIGHT TIME - ALONE for it, I just thought someone out in YA-land may know.

Sometimes mountain lions and bears make sounds kind of like that; but I think if it was a mountain lion, you probably would've described a rumbling sound along with it. It also might have been a wild dog; and under very rare and rapidly decreasing circumstances, you sometimes see moose in that area. One way to know for sure might be to call your local wildlife control and ask what might be making the noise.

LOL!!! First, I can't even see your face in this photo.....it's kind of dark. As far as the creature goes, it's just a One-Eyed, One-Horned Flying Purple People Eater. They're harmless.......don't worry gurl....but, maybe you should stay in the house till help arrives!!!

Once, long ago, I rode my bicycle (YES! I peddled) across country, and when in Arizona in the White Apache Indian Reservation (we were camped illegally: hey we were on bicycles!) I heard this snorting that scared thy shite out of my. I think it was a bore (wild pig). Gee, I wish I was collecting camp fire wood!

Large pigs called Hogzillas have been popping up lately as they were thought to be myths, but this has been in the south. I would look for tracks and excrement when its day light.

I could be my cat, but she only does that when you have food and, also, we live on the east coast. Sorry! It could be a big foot! Nawww!!!!, It's probably just an escaped genetics experiment. I'd leave it alone, just to be safe.

It sounds like a former roommate of mine. :-)
You're in bear country... so don't go hunting for this critter! It might be a lot bigger than you, and meaner, too.
