If an attorney doesn't know the truth, it's much harder for him to lie for you.
And if you tell the attorney, "Yes, I did it," do you want him telling anybody else?

Have you ever been arressted??
when you do, or whatever the reason you attain an attorney, you'll cherish that confidentiality. They will not "squeal" on you, tell anyone what you tell them , that is why you want a confident attorney.
1 bit of advise, for free. It's okay to be a nice client, but , - you want a tough lawyer! If you represent yourself, you have a fool for a client.
I hope this answers your question.
confidentiallity also saves your reputation & rumors about your situation from spreading , keeping it out of th e judges ear for a while, not making it a specticle of what's going down.

Why is confidentiality with your doctor or therapist so important? You have to be able to tell these people everything so they can do their job to help you. If you cannot trust them or they are not made to be trustworthy, then the system would not work so well.
