Dear friend
For children, where the facilities of abacus or calculator is not available, the fingers and toes are readily available tools given by God, and they need not be carried.
In advanced country like USA, even children of lower lasses use Calculator, but in India, we were made to by heart the tables etc, so many of the fundamental work we do it by memory itself.
It is a question of habit and convenience that any method will be used.
