I love to write, but for some odd reason I need to write poetry. How do I do that?

There are different styles of poetry, like haiku, and multiple others. If you want a book to help you to research different styles and formats, either check out your library, or purchase one in a book store. If need it be, check out amazon.com

Poetry does not have to rhyme.

I'm into creative writing, and poetry is one of them. Just put to words on paper however you feel like writing it. Just let the words flow on paper. It is up to you, afterwards, whether or not you want to edit what you just wrote. Poetry is an excellent way to journal if you don't want to write a diary the way most people do.

Good luck! If you ever want to compare notes, or want to ask something, email me! If I can help you, I will.

Lol, poetry is not hard, really. I'm 15 yrs old and I can do it. Not making fun or anything, but people think writing is such a huge talent-required hobby. It really isnt. Here's what I do--Lets say your writing about an emotion---Anger, Depression, Love, Envy, etc. Think of anything that makes you feel that way. For Example--your writing about Love. Think about a certain guy that you are intersted in, or perhaps with. Usually many thoughts come to mind right? Exactly. Or maybe an ex boyfriend. You can write about how you are better off without him, whatever you feel about them. Emotions are probably the easiest thing and most interesting thing to write about.

Most poetry has something to do with an emotion. So try to think of an emotion that qualifies for the type of poetry your writing. I also find that when writing, music is such a great aid. Example---

Poems about:
Anger--Rock Music
Sadness/Grief/Depression--any songs with slow music or sad/sweet lyrics
Envy--very, bitchy sounding songs...Pop perhaps

Lyrics in a song also play a huge role in that aid. Hopefully this information will help you, and hopefully you will consider it even though its coming from a 15 yr old.

Poetry is honesty, truth. Write down exactly what you're feeling. Some days you'll notice your emotions are stronger than others as soon as you feel it write it down, don't worry about how you write it just write it. (tip: carry a pen and paper everywhere you go and near your bedside as well) Write until your ideas stop set it aside and then come back to it, edit it a little, add in whatever extra feelings you feel after the fact. Read all of what you write and you'll be able to slowly get better. There are not really tricks you just start writing and keep writing. It'll get better and easier.

One of the best things you can do for yourself as a beginning poet is read lots of good poetry. Ask a teacher or librarian you trust to recommend a poetry anthology, a collection that includes work by many different writers. Some of the poets in the anthology will speak to you more than others. Get hold of books by those authors you like best and really delve into their stuff. If it doesn't feel too weird, read some of your favorite poems aloud to hear the words and feel them in your mouth. Try to read poets from different time periods and poets who write in different styles. Read some poems that use rhyme and meter and some that use free verse. Reading poetry is fun, it feeds your mind and soul, and it expands your imagination. The best poets probably read at least 100 poems by other people for every one poem that they write themselves. Enjoy.
