It's impossible for a one week, or even one month old child to deliberately speak a word and intend that word to mean something. Their brains are not that developed. It's possible for a baby to say something by accident, but they don't know what they're saying, or even how to control their mouth.

Sounds a bit far fetched, but you never know. My son could say Hi at two months and had a few others (things like hi/bye, mama, dada, etc.) by 7 months, and I KNOW he's not the earliest talker in the world. So just go along with it, if only to humor her.
*Edit* About 20 years ago, there was a baby who could speak so well that at just six months old, he told the pediatrician, "I have an inner ear infection." That baby was, of course, me. All joking aside, it really did happen (not to me, obviously), and was reported by doctors around the world. The child also excelled in other areas, and has one of the highest IQ's ever reported. Not all kids do things within the "norm;" just because other children may not talk until 8 or 9 months doesn't mean another might not talk much earlier than that. My son didn't start really walking until close to his first birthday (which is "average"), but I didn't doubt my friend when she said her son, who was the same age as my son, was toddling around at 8 months (which, let me tell you, was very entertaining to watch). But still, if he's talking at a week old, you might want to suggest that she contact Guinness.

A week old baby can make noise, but if it sounds like a word, it's a fluke. My brother insisted my daughter said "Al Gore" at about 4 months. I think this is a bit young to have political opinions and think it must have been "ah goor" which she said a lot. She has also yelled "yuk" and "bra." Now she's 7 months and is just now starting to attach noise to meaning. Each day her "mumumum" is getting to be more deliberate.

I think you meant 1 week old in your original question...yes, 1 week old is way to young to talk. As you know, newborns make noises, and they sometimes sound like familiar words...but a deliberate 'mum'? No.

Wow!One week does seem early! My nephew is 5 months and we can understand a few of the words he says.Every baby is different. But I do agree one week doesn't seem plausible.

I think you mean one week old baby? Yes, that is too soon for her to be making sense of the baby's babbles, she probably said "mmmm-uhh" and Mommy got over excited about it.

lol. funny you should ask.
my friends son is 8 days older than my son .. which makes him a whopping 4 1/2 months. My friend told me today that he said his first words a couple weeks ago, he said "mom" .. then she said that her husband said hi to him and he said "hi" back. lol. ... right about then, her husband left the room (in the middle of our conversation) .... I think he didn't wanna look as silly as her.
I know my son wants to talk, but if he were to actually say something like, "I pooped" .. or "feed me" .. I think I'd pee myself.
wishful thinking :)

It is far to young for them to talk properly but with all the different noises they make it may have sounded like it and your friend just got over excited

well, one year is 12 months, so that would be right on track I believe, if you are saying that your babies didn't start until 8 months...seems okay to me.

if you mean one week, there is no way that baby is talking!
