only if you're a fan of martial law and detention camps for dissidents -unconstitutional executive powers and a massive national debt still mounting, a controlled media and opposition and yet another attack on a sovereign nation on a false pretext.
what would the Founding Fathers say!!! .

The US is a country that by nature has to move forward. That means it needs to improve. In the last several years the 'conservatives' have managed to slow almost all progress with their retro policies and politics. At this point there is no 'direction'. It's a system based on poisoned propaganda spewing from the likes of the right wing talk show buzzards and the FOX affiliates. Oddly, there really aren't any problems that can't be solved by bold action and the application of science and reason...the two main pillars on which this country was founded. Instead of this BushWar for Oil, we could have high tech vehicals getting forty or miles per gallon of gas...getting us out of the middle east and it's troubles. Using high tech international police work the antics of Terror Inc. could be curtailed as with any criminal enterprise....instead the Bush Junta has us driving up and down the potholed roads of Iraq in 70 ton tanks and top heavy Humvees that are basically rolling coffins....all at the cost of thousands of lives and limbs using billions, if not trillions of borrowed dollars. A fraction of that money could have been used to build up a solar and wind infrastructure that could have gone a long way toward keeping the lights on. Instead we face a 'future' of 19th century coal burning power plants papered over with the slogan..'Clean Coal'. We could have a secure Social Security system, instead we're saddled with a 600 billion a year military designed to re-fight WW2, at a cost and size six times larger and more expensive than the next dozen countries together. We could have UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE at a cost far lower than the hit or miss system we have now. The Bush Junta insists on scaring people with the image of some kind of federal health CARE system...something that nobody has even suggested. Environmental laws have been ignored, Constitutional rights redefined, blame avoided, international good will squandered and our country now as patchwork of 'red' and 'blue' states instead of a United States. Believe me, if this can be defined as a 'direction' it's a direction that will throw a significant number of our fellow citizens into a third world existance looking back on some 'golden age' instead of looking forward as real Americans should. Do I like the direction America is going? Hell No!

That's a big question. I think at the bureaucratic level, our government is doing some amazing things...
-we really stuck it to S. Korea in the FTA (IMO)
-in a matter of years we were able to help Colombia get a state presence in each of its municipalities (the lack of a presence had created a major problem in the narcotics trade)
-the Gophers are going back to The Dance
-etc.

My biggest issue is in the (non-print) media's portrayal of this world. I am someone who believes strongly in a social contract and that Publius was right when he advised that Federalism wouldn't work without an active media. Too much of what I see is trivial and driven by how compelling a video is, a la the private tragedies of the photogenic white woman which have nothing to do with me and while terrible are trumped by the sheer volume of lesser "qualified" victims worldwide. Instead of reasoned analysis, we get breathless emotion. Poop.

Yes - I think we're still in deep trouble, but here are the positives:

Bush is totally discredited except for the hardcore kool-aid drinkers

The leading Republican candidates are moderates.

The evangelical candidates are noncontenders (Huckabee) or dropped out (Brownback).

The Democrats control the house and Senate so Bush can't do too much more damage.

With the exception of Hillary I like all the Deomcratic candidates.

Even if Hillary wins I get to watch the right go into convulsions.

Our mindless nationalism seems to be ebbing

We have exhausted our army to the point where we can't go running around the world starting pointless wars.

Things are improving.

Your question is vague, but here is my take on America today. The current administration has failed to understand the greater needs of the citizenry, they have involved us in a costly and dangerous war, and don't appear to care about the middle class. There are those people who are crippled with ambivalence and don't understand responsibility on any level. In the overall, however, I see people caring about one another, wanting change in lack of values, and appreciating the gifts we have been given. I also see a movement to make political changes that hasn't been apparent since the late 60s and early 70s. Political and social involvement is becoming more important. In the overall, I am optimistic about the American public if not the current leaders.

No, I don't like the direction that America is going toward now. If Hillary Win's or any democrat wins. Our Country will become a Socialist Country. I have been a Democrat for years. Not proud of it. There are bad apples on both sides. Libertarians are idiots, and who the hell wants a green peace tree hugger? So I am interested in three Republican's. Hopefully when Bush is gone, and another Republican is in office, I won't have to worry about our countries demise.

Of course not , were heading for a depression the dollar is less valuable than the Canadian lune , as one person said the disparity between the rich and poor is growing at a enormous rate, we keep borrowing money for this war from of all countries china which just recently dumped the dollar for the British currency, are civil liberties and our constitution is under attack,

No. We are fed garbage that things are getting better.
Yet...
Education is still deteriorating in our country...social security is dissipating gradually, the economy has been showing an unusually slow growth for years, and the rich keep becoming richer while the poor becomes poorer.
Also, no noteworthy political progress in Iraq for over a year.

Those voting for republicans are just voting for more of the same.

Nope. We have people who get into office beacuse of their reilgious beliefs rather than their attributes. People who listen to corporations rather than their constituants. News channels that would rather report on Britney than what happened in the world today. It's sad.....

I don't like the way the government has been going, and with Mr. Bush at the helm, who knows which direction it is headed in? I think it's an extremely frightening time, considering what's going on in Iran and Pakistan.
