x ² + 19x + 88 (as required)

you need to look first at what numbers multiply to 88. choices are 1 & 88, 2 & 44, 4 & 22, 8 & 11.
To figure out which to use, you then look at the 19x. Since the 19 is positive, the factors of 88 will need to ADD to 19. The only pair that does is 8 & 11, so you'll end up with

(x + 8) (x + 11)

if you are unsure after you factor, just FOIL back thru to check that you get what you started with.

(if the 19 had been negative , then the factors of 88 would need to subtract to 19)

x^2 + 19x + 88

=>x^2 + 11x + 8x + 88

=>x(x+11) + 8(x+11)

=>(x+11)(x+8)

it can also be written as...1x^2+19x+88 (1 is in front of "x").
First: multiply the 1st & 3rd term (1*88). find two numbers that give you 88 when multiplied & 19 (2nd term) when added/subtracted. the numbers are (8 & 11).

SEc: rewrite the expression with the new middle terms.

1x^2 + 8x + 11x + 88

Third: 4 terms - group "like" terms & factor both sets of parenthesis.

(1x^2 + 11x) + (8x + 88)
x(x+11) + 8(x+11)
(x+8)(x+11), or (x+11)(x+8)

Yep they are right. find factors of 88 that add to 19. Then, put them in the junk (x+8)(x+11)

Try factors of 88 that add to give you 19. Those two being 11 and 8. Since all your signs are the same, they will both be +. (x + 11) and (x + 8) will give you that polynomial if you FOIL it out. (x+11)(x+8).

Your two numbers need to multiply to get 88 and add to get 19.

In this case, both must be positive (you have x^2 + ax + b).
Try 88 and 1. These add to 89.
Try 44 and 2. These add to 46.
Try 22 and 4. These add to 26.
Try 11 and 8. These add to 19. !!

That means you have (x+11)(x+8).
If you want, you can foil it out to check.

x² + 19x + 84 = 0 x² + 19/2x = - 84 + (19/2)² x² + 19/2x = - 336/4 + 361/4 (x + 19/2)² = 25/4 x + 19/2 = 5/2 = x + 19/2 - 5/2, = x + 14/2, = x + 7 = x + 19/2 + 5/2, = x + 24/2, = x + 12 Answer: B. x + 7

Look for 2 numbers who when multiplied equal to the 88...that would be 8 and 11.
