Put him down and see if he can go to sleep on his own. Do not get in the habit of holding your baby all of the time, This will lead to a baby who thinks he cannot breathe if he is not sitting on mama's lap. Some people will disagree with that idea, but not me. Been there and done that.

I wish I could tell you there is a magic spell you can cast.
Mine is 11 months now. My first slept through the night from 6 weeks on. This one, not so much. I thought I was doing something wrong. She takes a paccy and if she wakes up without it, I am up to. I has gotten much better in the last 2 months and she has been pretty good about sleeping from 7 to 7.
There have been time where I have had to let her cry for 20-30 minutes becuase I just needed a minute.
Make sure you have a good night time routine (Bath, Book, Bottle/Breast Feed and Rocking before bed). EVentually this will make a difference, but it just takes time. If he wakes up try to get him back to sleep with the least amount of activity. If you do not have to change him, don't. See if you can pat him on the back and leave him in the bed. This worked sometimes for me.
Do you have anyone who can come over and get up with him for one night so you can get some sleep?
Keep it up and it will get better. I know you are very tired but it does improve.

Babie kind of make their own schedule in the beginning. You might try a little oatmeal mixed with his milk and feed him the mixture by spoon or in his bottle. You may have to make a bigger hold in the nipple for him to suck it through. He could still be hungry and that will add a little sustinance for him. If you put him back down and he does not cry then let him lay there and listen to a wind up toy and stay awake for awhile. See if he'll go back to sleep on his own. Sometimes that works. Good luck I know it is exhausting but it does not last that long. It is just part of being a mom. You will get through it we all did.

It could possibly be the way your 5mth old gets to sleep. Does he go to sleep by himself or with your aid. Some babies wake often and need the prop or whatever they went to sleep in the first place to go back to sleep again. On the other hand if this is a new thing then maybe it could be teeth, hunger (growth spurt), sickness? Try read the Baby Whisperer by Tracey Hogg, I found this helped us.

Just part of being a newborn, they get their days&nights mixed up and it takes awhile for them to get used to a pattern, be consistent in putting them to bed at rhe same time each night, also you stated he sleeps ok while you are holding&patting him>>> could be your little one is already spoiled(smile) it happens, espically with your first, so don't feel bad, I did that too. You have to slowly get them use to sleeping without you holding them, this will cause even more sleepless night, but they will get the idea eventually. Good luck.

My five month old is the same way. He was sleeping better but all of a sudden he started waking in the night. I found if I fed him solids in the daytime he would sleep better at night.
Right now he gets one serving of fruit or veggie and two servings of rice cereal. This combo means I get a good nights rest!!

Can't say why your baby won't sleep through the night buy my youngest didn't until he was 10 1/2 months old. All babies are different. And yes, it is exhausting.

Babies dont always sleep thru the night. Maybe he just needs a drink of water, not milk, and a warm cuddle. No one said it was going to be easy
