this may seem like a silly question but my computer is set to automatically defag once a week at 2 or 3:00 am.
can it defrag if the computer is shut off?

It Won't If It's Off. You Can Change The Time It Does It, Or Manually Do It Any Time.

The above post is correct, the computer will not defrag if it is off.

On the flip side, if you are using windows 2000, XP, or Vista dont' worry about defragging. NTFS doesn't need it.

If you want to defrag while you are doing other operations on the PC you can set one of the automatic defraggers to run in the background while you are doing your stuff. There are many options in the market and they dont eat up system resources even while the PC is doing other functions.
