I have just moved into a new house (well old house really) and have noticed that the toilet bowl has a very small amount of water in it ... not much to aim at!!! I have tried manually filling it up and flushing it many times but it all ways rests at the same level?? It annoying me no end? Any suggestions? Just a note, this is a very old house and has a few sloping floors - not sure if this could be the problem. Not like the floors are at a sharp angle but there is a gradual tilt in the toilet. Some ideas, help would be much appreciated.

the tap is turned on full and the toilet cystern(?) is porcelaine and will NOT budge when trying to get it off. In fact the flusher button is stopping it from coming off anyway. Have already tried both these things ... cheers though

It is caused by the design of the bowl. Toilets have a built-in trap (just like the "U" shaped pipe in sink drains) that only holds so much water. Any excess goes down the drain. Thats why even manual filling does not bring the level up.

Most likely your ballcock has a blockage in it stopping the flow from the fill tube. That's the little hose on top going into the big tube. This is where your water comes from to fill your bowl.
You can either open the top and blow out the debris or replace the ballcock. The first is cheaper. But depending on the age of the ballcock you may be better off just replacing it. Good luck.

Take the cover off the toilet tank. Check the water level in it. If it's low, you will have to adjust the float (It's usually a black ball shape). To raise the water level, bend the shaft that the ball is on upward.
