JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel is quietly preparing for the possibility of a nuclear-armed Iran despite public pledges to deny its arch-foe the means to pose an "existential threat," Israeli political and defense sources said on Thursday.
They said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has instructed cabinet officials to draft proposals on how Israel, whose security strategy is widely assumed to hinge on having the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, might deal with losing this monopoly.
Israel predicts that Iran's nuclear program could produce warheads by 2009. Western intelligence services say it may take several more years.

Arabs and Jews hate each other. I know an Iranian woman, and she says Jews make her skin crawl. WTH?! Anyway, I've met Jews who look down upon Arabs. This is nothing new, and the fight has been going on for thousands of years, and was predicted in the Bible. Anyone worried about "peace in the Middle East" is not informed about Bible prophecy.

I think a nuclear Iran is necessary and would be a big plus to help in bringing about an end to Israel's aggression and occupation of Arab lands in the Middle East. For far too long Israel has launched its attacks with impunity, but a nuclear Iran would force it to stop being such an aggressor and to treat its neighbors with a little more respect.
The fighting in the Middle East has NOT been going on for thousands of years as the person above me said. The present-day crisis int he Middle East has onle been going on since Israel was founded and began launching its attacks on the Arabs, some 70 plus years ago. The present state of Israel had NOTHING at all to do with the biblical Israel, which was a completely different entity, and so the biblical stories relate to the present Israel and Israeli jews not at all. Any biblical prophesies referring to "Israel" refer to something completely unrelated to the present-day state bearing the same name.

merely an substantial historic factor : in basic terms some years till now u.s. Soviet crumple Imam Khomieni (Iranian chief ) wrote a letter to Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (is a former Soviet statesman) and counseled him which you're attaining the top through fact your human beings won't have the capacity to undergo the tension imposed on them!! the main obligatory objective of Islamic revolution in Iran is to tug down all great powers to enable Imam Mahdi(the final son of Muhammad who's good now 1250 years previous and is stated in Quran that stands out as the subsequent international ruler chosen from god to help undesirable s to overcome riches !!) Imam Khomeini till now his death stated usa is the excellent devil meaning US is the final step for us and Israel isn't considered substantial impediment ! so which you're able to desire to assert Iran as against US no longer Israel . i'm uncertain what happens yet Russian fought US for saving their u . s . however the state of affairs is punctiliously diverse right here .Iran isn't scuffling with for saving this is u . s . yet to tutor that Quran forecasts is coming with the aid of no longer via killing American yet just to tutor the international that no longer US nor the different u . s . is any greater a great ability that may choose on behalf of alternative international locations and attack them for no reason!

Because the US / UK / France on one side, and the USSR and/or China on the other, were ruled by rational people who based their decisions on what was best for their own countries in "this" life. (Even though they all differed widely on what WAS best)
Both Iran, and - to a lesser extent - Israel however are theocracies ruled on the basis of religion. Of primary importance to Iran's mullahs especially is what's best for their peoples in the NEXT life.
If the Iranian mullahs knew that launching a nuclear attack on Israel would result in the death of their entire population that wouldn't be a deterrent, because it would guarantee all Iranians a spot in paradise as a martyr.

The hatred between Jews & Arabs has been ongoing for thousands of years. The united States has only been around for 230 years, Iran has no intrest in listening to us.The fact that Israel has nukes, Syria wants nukes, & Iran is devloping nukes just throws napalm on the fire. It doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon.
Get ready to duck & cover!!!

The Israelis and Iranians are more paranoid than the US and USSR were.
Because the Nazis tried to kill off all the European Jews all those years ago, the Israelis believe they have earned the right to now cut down those who pose threats to them.
To some extent, the US has given them the ability to act out and strike those who may pose threats to them (Israeli strike on Iraq's nuke plant in the 80s, their recent attack on the alleged nuke site in Syria, frequently claiming they will do the same to Iran).
It won't work....even during the Cold War, the US and USSR were trade partners. Does anyone know how much trade occurs between Iran and Israel???
The US and USSR may have been enemies but they knew they had to trade with each other...bringing them closer together makes them less likely to jump the gun and go to war. Pushing them away, cutting them off from the world just makes them more paranoid/desperate.

The USA and the USSR both wanted to survive.
Survival is not important to Shiite extremists. If they can bring on the last war and the Hidden Mahdi returns, the world will end and they will be in paradise.
Even the Sunni extremists are not focussed on survival. Osama, for instance, has no plans for how to run things after winning. He represents no nation. He and others like him are just terrorists, with no practical goals. Thus they haven't given much thought to the survival of their people.

Because Ahmadinejad wants to see the coming of the 12th Imam Al-Mehdi which would bring about the end of the world. He thinks that he would then go to heaven to the big orgy in the sky with the 72 virgins etc...thus he welcomes death. The USA and USSR were not death cultists and valued life.

Because it was assumed, and proven right, that as long as the other side would blow you to bits, what is the point of picking a fight? There would be nothing left to rule....Both sides were rational
The terrorists of the mid-east are not rational....and would blow the infidels to bits, and the mutually assured destruction is unimportant, because dying for the cause is a direct path to Nirvana...
