13 years sober. This is gonna sound bizarre but better to be a sober alcoholic than to never have been an alcoholic.
What I learned and had to do in my life in order to stay sober (until it became the preferred way of life) was an experience I would not trade for any other in this life.

Sure. But everybody has some kind of addiction. It could be chocolate, TV, exercise. I'm married to a recovering alcoholic so I'm not gonna pick on alcoholics. Not saying you are. I'm just waiting for the back lash.
