In the U.S., all taxes we pay (local, state & federal income taxes; sales taxes; property taxes; licenses & fees; all the taxes your employer pays which ultimately come out of your paycheck; gas taxes; phone taxes; etc. etc. etc.) add up to about 40% of our income. That means for about 40% of the year, you're the slave of the gov't, which takes your wages for that time. Land of the free? Ha! Only relative to other countries, most of which have even higher tax rates.

People usually cede power (rights and income) to the gov't out of fear: fear of crime, fear of terrorism, fear of failing, fear of being totally responsible for their own lives, fear of not having a safety net if they fall on hard times. Politicians are very good at convincing people to do this, making it out to be a benefit that the gov't is providing. It's sad that our country was founded in rebellion against far less taxes & tyranny than we have today, and people like Ron Paul and other libertarians are regarded as fringe radicals. Methinks we're overdue for another Tea Party.

The government as long as "national security" is a priority.
