Okay - I'm going to try this again and I guess I need to be really specific. I'm not asking for you to tell me how you hate the names or how they sound like a western movie. I really hate answers that aren't relevant to the question. Come on people!!!

I dont like Jaden, Aiden, Caden, Braden or Makayla or any form of those names. Also none of those weird spellings to substitue a "unique" name. I like strong names with strong meanings. I picked out Phoenix and Maverick. So good middle names and other names would be helpful. Just looking for something a little different than your ordinary "ashley and michael"

I respect your wish to avoid the usual names.

I like Phoenix.

If I wasn't clear about Maverick, let me say it this way: Maverick is a *very* masculine name. It's like Gunnar or Killian or Brutus, but without the history of being used as a name. If your son turns out to be athletic, that might seem like the perfect choice. But if he's another kind of guy, it will probably feel a little awkward.

In the 1950s, Maverick was one of many television Westerns. The original lead character, Bret Maverick, was played by James Garner. While I had to look up the exact details, I think many people hear Maverick and think of the Wild West. It was a big hit, and Mel Gibson even took a stab at doing a movie version in the early 90s. You might not know it, but betcha it has VERY high recognition.

Maverick was also Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun. Not a cowboy, but not far off. And even more well known.

And there's the NBA team. Which we all know, right?

While the word has a great meaning - independent, original, daring - in cultural use, it's tinged with cowboys and daredevils, and very masculine ones at that.

Because the name has such an image attached to it, it feels like there's not a lot of space for your kiddo to be his own person. It's kind of like the kids' names in Talladega Nights: Walker and Texas Ranger. They're so tough, so rough that the parents seem to have closed off the possibility that their sons will grow up to be cellists or academics or dancers.

This might just be overthinking the name, but my gut reaction is "Maverick? Wow. Better hope he's a big guy, or he'll get teased to pieces."

Don't name your boy Michael or Braden. But I'm not sure you should name him Maverick, either. There are many more interesting name choices that don't have such a heavy, tough-to-fulfill meaning attached.
