I have a 1997 Ford Aspire manual. Yesterday it started making slightly annoying noises, and today the noises are really loud and the car is difficult to put in gear. It's really acting up in the first four gears, but when I get to 5th it doesn't do anything weird. It even makes the noises when I'm in neutral unless I hold down the clutch.

get your transmisson checked, this happened to me, my gears "slipped" so the ratio was off until i got to 4th gear also use your clutch instead of RPM's when shifting

Could be your clutch is getting bad and needs replacement. I had a similar problem on my 2003 Cobra Mustang and replacing the clutch cleared it up. It could also be your synchronizers in your transmission are wearing out. The clutch would be the cheapest and easiest to repair, and I would bet that is your problem. As for cost, getting a quote from a local/dependable shop would be your best bet.

Sounds like you should take it to a shop. It's either your clutch or transmission.
