If I had it my way, Hawkeye wouldn't have lost his sanity, Father Mulcahey wouldn't have lost his hearing, and Major Winchester wouldn't associate musice with death and destruction . There would have been more looking forward to the Korean War's end and getting ready to go home .
At the "goodbye party" scene, Father Mulcahy would have read Ecclesiastes 3 : 1 -- 8 ( "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven" ) out loud, followed by Hawkeye reading Chief Joseph's surrender speech ( "I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." ), and B. J. reading Desiderata by Max Ehrmann ( "Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence ." ) .
During the part where everybody said a few words about what they would be doing with their lives in the future, B. J . would have said "We've all heard Colonel Potter say part of the time, he'll be a country doctor and most of the time, he'll be Mrs . Potter's Mr. Potter ! In my case, part of the time, I'll be a Mill Valley's Dr . Hunnicutt, and most of the time, I'll be Mrs . Hunnicutt's Mr. Hunnicutt !" .
There would have been another character, a nurse from a little town near Crabapple Cove, Maine with Hawkeye's crazy sense of humor . Hawkeye would have fallen in love with her . When B. J . left, he would have pointed to Hawkeye and said to her "Take good care of him ! There's only one of him, and he's it !" . When everybody left one by one, they would have shaken Hawkeye's hand before leaving and said to him "Give my best to your father !" .

I think the finale was an a typical episode of MASH and it deserved the accolades it received as the best watched finale in the history of TV at the time. If I did any changing it would be the end but only slightly and Hawkeye and Hot Lips would be hired at the same hospital and get married and we possibly could see what they would have been like yearss done the road.

I thought it was really good. I went out and bought the DVD a few months ago just to see how it ended and I was surprised by the ending, especially with how Hawkeye was for most of the episode and that what really happened was revealed slowly. I honestly wouldn't change a thing.
