For you personally, what does it mean? And do you have a specific example? Like a poem, or a song (provide name and artist please), or some art example, etc.

Thanks for your help!

It means I enjoy the freedom, and understand the responsibilities that come with it. As a Navy vet, I served my country with pride and honor, knowing at any time I could make the ultimate sacrifice. I vote, volunteer, and respect my country and its flag.

"God Bless America" by Irving Berlin..."The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Phillip Sousa, and our National Anthem all speak to this. (There actually ARE words to "The Stars and Stripes Forever", btw--) Navy Blue and Gold speaks to duty.

Great question...thanks for asking!

I don't have any high art suggestions, I noticed.
I was raised with John Wayne and Godzilla movies also "High Noon" "Animal House". Family comedies - like the "Cosby" "All in the Family" "Simpson's" mirrors our life - how important family life really is in a healthy community.
I like America as in "Dave" and "American President" - when president Shepherd made his end of movie speech about how hard being an American is I always agree because it's true, daily everyone is tested.
I would also suggest watching the Food and History, and Discovery channels (and others) - when they have shows about breakfast or events and how from a small beginning these and others spread across the nation - tying us together in memories of food, ballgames, war, historical events.
Americans are individualistic, but community minded. Defenders of family, but of singles right to party. University and lovers of knowledge, and of sports. Almost yin and yang - as of the physical stereotypes of fame. Pink and Lucy (Ball) Arnaz. Mr. Hawking and his opposite. Mr King and Mr. Kennedy - speeches and goals.
Humble winners, and losers. No cheating in any event, no matter the reason. Mr. Ali good example.
Gotta stop babbling, sorry. American are hard to give small examples.
Peace.

The Freedom--we can do so much freely. I like the statue of liberty as an art example. I love being able to love and serve God and go to church and have a say in our government by getting to vote. We have so many freedoms that other countries don't--too many to mention. We are very lucky to be Americans and we should always stand proud when the National Anthem is played.

To be an american to me makes me proud to know that we set the example for every other country in the world. We are the only remaining superpower, and alot of people rely on us for aid. Without the United States the world would be a much different place. I'm proud to be a part of this system however there are alot of problems with our country. Hopefully the majority of these problems will be addressed in the 08' presidential election.

Being an American reminds me of the definition of optimism and pessimism. The optimist believes that this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears that this is true. That is my American experience.

It means that I have to apologize for our government. It means I have doubts that our governments motives are legit.

And it means that I can travel the world freely but not necessarily be liked by people in most parts of the world.

It means that sometimes I have to pretend I am Canadian.

“The true meaning of America, you ask? It's in a Texas rodeo, in a policeman's badge, in the sound of laughing children, in a political rally, in a newspaper... In all these things, and many more, you'll find America. In all these things, you'll find freedom. And freedom is what America means to the world. And to me.” Audie Murphy

It is liberty, freedom, courage, honor and loyalty.

For me it means that being american doesn't necesarily mean being from the usa.
America is NOT only the usa. I'm not from the usa, but I'm still an american just as anyone from the usa.
