Hot water, (Hydronic), heating with Gas is a
pretty robust system.
No filters to change.
You might 'bleed` the radiators to check for
air pockets, (DIY), and have the burners and
chimney checked once a year, (by a Pro).
There will be a circulator pump that runs when
the system is heating. If this gets noisy, it's a sign
of trouble.
Otherwise, "If it works, don't fix it."

To bleed the radiators:
(Dissolved air tends to collect in them.)
There will be a small fitting, like a mini-faucet
with a screw-slotted stem on each radiator.
Just hold a small container under the spout,
and loosen the screw until some water drains,
then tighten it again.

It sounds like you need some preventitive maintenance. If you are hearing an unfamiliar sound when the gas kicks on it sounds like the ignition systen for the gas is kicking on a lot later than it should. When the furnace turns on the igniter should be glowing or the spark should be popping before the gas valve opens. If it allows the gas to open too soon and fills up the chamber with gas, you could get a very nasty ignition in the furnace or small explosion. Almost like filling a room with gas then striking a match. WOOOSh Have it checked . In a forced hot water system make sure that all the registers or radiotor are bled of any air. What Hubby dont know could hurt or possibly kill you. Gas or any type of furnace should be checked each heating season

You should contact a local home inspector. They can check it out and tell you honestly if there is anything wrong (it shouldn;t be really loud). If you call a plumbing contractor out, they will likely tell you that you need a new unit, because that is how they make money. A home inspector doesn't care if you fix it or not, he will just tell you what is wrong with out bias.

no real maintenance really needed except if there is other problems such as thermo-couple, circulation pump or if the chimney needs cleaning
