What is a realistic hourly pay rate?

The question is not about how much you make, but how much you keep. You can be earning thousands of dollars and spending those on cars, computers, cells etc.. But at the end everything will end up the same.

I'd say, investing in a land/property/house is always a good deal. Even though interests have to be paid for mortgage loans, all those expenses are deductible.

Also putting money on an IRA or 401k is not a bad option either. Are you by yourself? I'd say 40k/yr should be enough to take care of any immediate needs and let you pay a house, but this is always relative to place you live. There are some places like SF, CA or MIA, FL where these salaries are not enough, but other places like DAL,TX or HOU,TX where these salaries will easily let you live without a piece of mind.

If you want to live well and save for goals like retirement, pay off student loans and other current spending you should make at least 25 an hour if married each making 20 would work where I am, some places cost more and some much less.

Hourly pay rate for what job? Your pay should be based on the marginal value that you add to the product or service..

In all developed/first world countries, we live like kings and queens compared to the way most people are living. So my answer is minimum wage.
