Sidney Crosby has to be my choice here although if you want to break that down into forward and defensemen in category 1 and goalies in the second category I have to vote for Tim Thomas in net.He has kept the bruins in more games and his losses are 1 point and often in OT.That's usually because the rest of the team is not doing their job. And I say this as a die hard B's fan.

Crosby this and Crosby that, YUCK! That sickens me that the majority of people are told by the media that Crosby is the greatest thing and they buy into it hook line and sinker. Like was said before 1 or 2 year wonders have been around since the beginning of the league. Joe Thorton also is good but to young and has not proved much on a long term scale. To answer your ? there are to many variants to come up with a definitive answer at this juncture to as who is the absolute best player. IF I had to choose just one right now, like the other guy said, Ilya would be it.

Joe thornton has to be the best player in the game at the moment. crosby is good but for me his hype as beeing the next wayne isnt even close crosby will never score more then 90+ goals in a season or get 200+ points also the reason i give the edge to thornton is he has the same skill as crosby but thornton is more enertaining to watch because of his size and hitting ability to me crosby is a whinner lol i cant stand the kid. and as for the guy who said thornton hasnt won a cup...ummm look who he played for his first like 4-5 years he was the only player on boston that was half good.he is finally on a good team now which is still extremly young( san jose ) but i belive will win a few cups in the next 10 years

to Bryan M and all the opthers who say Thorton: exactly what more has Joe Thorton done than Crosby? No Cup for either. Art Ross for both. Hart for both. And Crosby has a Pearson award. Neither won the Calder. Seems Crosby is one up. Next!!!

Lidstrom, followed by Scott Niedermayer (if he returns).
Hockey is about winning and these guys are all about that... more than Crosby, more than Thornton, more than Jagr or any high point total player...

I know most say Sydney Crosby but the truth is they're right. Crosby presents great scoring abilty and is a magician w/the puck on his stick and does things that don't show up on the scoresheet killing penaltys blocking shots and grinding it out down low. Hes a combo of Martin St Louis, Joe Thorton and Tomas Holdstrom

Most dominant player today is Joe Thornton, big, skate, mean streak, pass, shoot, score.
Sid the kid has a few years to go to replace Joe is ever.
Sid hasn't proven anything to me yet, one year does not a career make, the league has been full of one or two wonders.
