Why do people see Islam as a terrible religion?

Do they realize that the media is LYING to them? I got to talk to a Muslim person today. He was a very good man and he started an organization that helps parents reconnect with their families after they get out of prison. He told me he used to live on the streets and he did drugs and was constantly drinking. Then, he found Islam and it helped him put his life together and work to help others. He explained and showed me that Islam is NOT a religion of violence or killing but a one of peace. He also told me the Muslim extremists are actually enemies of Islam because they give the religion a bad reputation. He spoke truthfully from his heart and really opened my eyes today. Why can't most Americans look past the ranting fools in our media who think they know everything about the religion when they are not Muslim, stop judging Muslims and actually listen to a Muslim person and hear the truth from a person who would know best?

Because the prominent Muslims currently happen to be Islamists, and the media won't say otherwise. PBS actually refused to air a documentary that gave a voice to moderate Muslims, and gave them the opportunity to speak out against Islamists.

I'm sure that there are some good Muslim people. However, I suggest that your read some history of the religion before you make up your mind & start preaching to others who may know a bit more about it than just talking to some man on the street! May I suggest that you read the life of Muhammad & how he started the Islamic religion? That just might give you a better idea of the religion & how they view people who do not accept the teachings of Islam.

Listen, thinking of Islam as a bad religion isn't racist nor is the media responsible for giving us that information. On the last passages of the Qu'ran, there are verses condoning violence against non-Muslims and there is even one that says "he that desires another religion other than Islam, shall not be accepted of him". Why do you think Islam countries kills any person that converts to another faith? Many Muslims regard the Qu'ran as the final authority (pretty much like the guy you talk to probably) if the Qu'ran condones murdering non-Muslims then for them is okay. Where do you think terrorism comes from? They come from Muslim ideology that bases their hatred on those passages from the Qu'ran. Mohammed himself killed many in wars and took many Jews captured (you can look it up). The goal of Islam terrorists is not to kill us all, is to convert us to Islam. They see us morally inferior and want to control us. You should know that dogs are forbidden in Islam and so is adoption. Why? Because Mohammed banned it and his reasons are very sick. Don't take my word for it, you can go to websites and even talk to your friend. There is no Islamaphobia, no one is denying that many Muslims are good people. However, the fact is that those terrorists got their ideas from somewhere and it wasn't men. It was the text they regard as the word of Allah so in a way Islam is tainted and bad. Even CAIR has been found to have connections with Hezbollah and Hammas. One of the leading members had been donating money to Hezbollah! He is currently under investigation. We have to be careful with how much devotion Muslims give the Qu'ran. Remember, Bin Laden's teacher Sayyid Quabad (?) knew the Qu'ran by heart. He taught a young Bin Laden that non-Muslims deserve to die and women have no rights. He obtained this information from passages in the Qu'ran.

I agree that many Muslims think that way and I wish all did but that is not the case. Those who are violent in their ways base their actions on the Koran and believe truly that they are the real Muslims and do a much better job of proving it with their holy writings. Note how many times they prove and teach their ways and how very very little it is contested by the so called peaceful Muslims. There is almost no leading Islamic teachers openly proving from their writings that they are the correct followers of Islam. Also note how they refuse to label the current violent Islamic groups as terrorists. Why? I'm afraid that the current battle of who is the true followers of Islam is being easily won by the terrorists.

Maybe, but just because how they treat women is enough for me to consider their religion out of synch with our society!
In Islamic religion a man would never marry a woman with blue eyes as it is seen as superior to man, which cannot be tolerated by the avid followers of Islam. Of course not all follow such rules, not all are comforming to this, but in practice most will think it twice before marrying a blue eyed woman!
So to treat a woman as lesser than man, is like returning a few decades back, and I am not sure why, but I have always believed that all wars on Earth will only disapear when the other sex (in this case woman for me), will be considered as a human being, and not only the opposite sex!
With this religion, women may surely find something great for them, but overall it is far from great for human kind!

I had to study the Koran in school as a history major. It is full of admonitions to obey Allah, follow the teachings of the prophet. Heaven is for the true believers, and to send "infadels" to hell if they do not convert. There is little else.
No prophecy.
No history
No wisdom writtings.
Nothing.
There is absolutely no comparison between the Biblw and the Koran. To do so insults the Bible.
Islam is an empty cup for those who thirst for truth.
Gary B is right, and theres little else of redeeming value in the thing.
Like I said, I've read the entire Koran and own a copy, as too the Bible...several times with much study in between the covers too.

First. The more more moderates must stand up and denounce the radicals. If in fact the are doing that, they are not being heard.

Second..People will take what they want from any large subject or religion. Some take the peaceful uplifting aspects, others are drawn to the more horrible things.

Most of the media IS trying to report that not all Muslims are bad people. I do not know what you are watching or reading but most of the media agrees with your assessment. Most Americans agree with your assessment as well. It is a radical fringe that twist Islam’s message who create problems for the entire world.
