There's a big difference between unique and unusual. Unusual is something like, oh, say, Verity. It's not in the Top 1000 names for any of the last 15 years, but look in many baby books, and there it is.

Kylie was the 66th most popular name given to baby girls last year, and that's before you consider Kyla (204), Kiley (429) and Kylee (146). If you want unusual, forget Kylie and Kaylie and anything similar.

Lucy is great, but certainly not unusual. It was 152 last year.

Cheryl isn't a common baby name now, but back in the 1960s/1970s, it was fairly popular. (Think Cheryl Tiegs.) So there are lots of Cheryls out there. They're just in their 30s.

So for rare, bordering on unique, you'll need to dig a little deeper. How about:

Story
Daphne
Kerensa
Tamsin
Anica
Elodie
Sidra
Avalon
Indigo
Madigan

Some of these might be too strange for your aunt's tastes, but they're all certainly rare. Enjoy your new cousin!

What about Lucille or Lucinda? You can still call her Lucy, she just has a more formal name. You can also mix it up and spell it Lucie. That's a nice change.

Here are other ones I like as well.

Liliana - Lili
Marisol - Marie
Jocelyn - Jocie
Felicity - Fifi
Franchesca - Fran or Franni
Teresa - Terry
Zeliana - Zeli

I love the name Lucy, I have known many Lucys and they have all been lovely girls and fantastic women, I don't think I have ever met an unkind or unlikable Lucy.
