I have an entry level position that I am not interested in and it is making me regret getting a master's degree in statistics every day that I go to work there. What should I do.

I would like to work in the educational field or business field.

A masters in statistics is rather specific. If you want to get into education or teaching you may need to do a teaching degree, but a career in business may be possible with the qualifications you have now. Possibly consider some courses in business administration or public relations or something like that on a part time basis, to make you more employable in business.

Are there opportunities for advancement where you are now? If so, that might be an option if you can handle your current job long enough to do that.

I have found in my life that if we go looking for the opportunities they are usually there. Begin watching the job market in your area and applying for things that interest you, even if you do not totally meet the listed criteria. You never know - you might find something that really interests you where they will let you upgrade your qualifications while on the job. That happened to one of my daughters.

Best of luck with it.

When you were studying stats, did you ever happen to learn SAS?

I see job postings all the time from financial firms in need of SAS programmers and data analysts, and they will pay upwards of $70k starting. I'm not even searching for these job posts, either. My job has nothing to do with econ or finance. I work in health care! But I guess having SAS skills on my resumé got me put onto some interesting mailing lists.

If you haven't studied SAS before, go back and take a supplemental course to learn it. It is the single most marketable skill I have seen in statistics.
