What would an appropriate punishment for paedophiles and sex offenders?

Should they be treated as mentally ill, or prosecuted as criminals?
Capital punishment? Life sentences?
Should the community be made aware if one is living in their area?
Do they have a right to privacy after they have served their time?

It's a crime, and should be punished - severely - as such. The offender should, however, receive mental health treatment while in prison, because the stimulus to commit the crime comes from mental illness.

Castration is NOT an answer, because most "sex" crimes are actually crimes of *power*, in which sex is just the 'weapon' that the abuser uses. Making them incapable of having sex doesn't remove the urge to overpower helpless victims.

It's also important not to make the punishment, especially for child molesters, "too" severe.

Not because I feel sorry for child molesters, but because if the penalty for molesting a child gets to be too close to that for killing one, molesters will be more likely to kill their victim to leave no witness.

They should be convicted and sent to jail. Maybe not life, but at least a few years behind bars. If the victim is younger than 12 or older than 65, then in most states he could be convicted for life.
And yes, the community should be aware if they are living near pedophiles.

They should be treated as mentally ill.... anyone who thinks like that obviously has issues....

the problem is that nowadays the gov. can't support the mentally ill... so the offender will end up in jail nonetheless...
